One of two armed suspects was shot and killed on Tuesday evening after approaching a couple walking along Isikalu Street in Birch Acres, who had allegedly been robbed of a handbag.
Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, said police are investigating charges of murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.
The incident occurred at approximately 9.30pm as police officials were executing their normal patrol duties when they received a complaint of a shooting in progress.
“On arrival on scene they found the victims, a 33-year-old man and his girlfriend, who were alleged walking along the street when a white Audi with an unknown registration number suddenly stopped in front of them.

“Two men jumped out of the car and confronted them. One pointed a firearm at the woman and grabbed her bag containing clothes, money and cellphones,” Madiga stated.
She said as the man attempted to flee, one suspect shot him in his lower body.
“The victim retaliated by pulling out his licensed firearm and shot the armed suspect and wounding the second suspect.”
The second suspect escaped in a getaway car and the body of the dead suspect was taken to Germiston Mortuary shortly thereafter as officials attended to the scene.
Madiga warned the community that an increasing number of streets in Birch Acres and Norkem Park have become hot spots for armed robberies, targeting vulnerable pedestrians.
She reminded pedestrians to be on high alert when traversing these areas and not to be distracted by their cellphones while travelling alone.
