Amazing talent hidden in the hands of a homeless man
“I want my old life back, a life of being able to provide for myself with no hassle.”
Martin Machapa (45), a homeless resident who sheltered at Coen Scholtz Community Centre in Birchleigh North, has been declining spare change and instead hands out his CV with hopes of landing a paying hairdresser job.
Machapa was granted the opportunity by Shaun Unterslak, who is the founder of Unemployed Need Transformation that assists individuals such as the 45-year-old to reconnect and rededicate himself to his talent as hairdresser.
“I ended up on the streets as I lost my business. I went from having a normal life and stable housing to sleeping on the streets. In the blink of an eye, everything changed. Such is life,” said Machapa.
The Coen Scholtz Community Centre’s resident has been haunted with the desire to live a different life.

“Amid the lockdown, I was granted the opportunity to stay at the shelter and this enabled me to be transparent with myself regarding my life.
“It helped me acknowledge my struggles and helped me identify my desire to change the course of things. I was lucky enough to meet
Shaun who believed in me and gave me a chance to grow by assisting me to acquire skills that will help me get my dream hairdressing job.
“I was a hairdresser before. My previous hairdressing business collapsed due to a lack of funds.
“While on the streets, I missed meeting people and giving them a new look and full makeover. When a new client becomes a regular client, they become family.
