“To everyone in Kempton, your support helped me achieve this. I salute you. You are close to my heart.”
Glen Marais resident, loving husband and father of two, Hannes van der Walt was announced as the winner of the Mr South Africa 2020 title this weekend.
Hannes has become well-known to Kemptonians with the introduction of the Express’ new content pillars in recent weeks.

One would think because the van der Walts shared an intimate journey with the Express that the paper had premonitions that Hannes was bound to win the crown.
However, we just know a winner in our community when we see one.
When Hannes was invited to thank his sponsors at the celebratory evening he hosted on Monday night, he joked that all the charming words and glorification felt like he was witnessing his own funeral.
To Kemptonians, Hannes said: “I’m privileged to be your new Mr SA, proudly from Kempton Park.
“To everyone in Kempton, your support helped me achieve this. I salute you. You are close to my heart.”
He said having this platform means a lot and that he’d appreciate his community’s prayers and encouragement.
“Families are a big part of what I stand for and I aspire to equip and inspire the fathers, mothers and children of South Africa to remember that you have a big platform in your own household and should realise that community values and work starts at home.”
At the event, his wife, Natasha, told guests their household is humbled by the favour God has bestowed upon them with this new voyage.
“When Hannes told me he had entered this competition, he said his vision was not to be in the top 20 or the top 10. He told me he entered to become the next Mr SA. He wanted to win.
“At first I thought he might be going through a mid-life crisis,” Natasha mocked.
She congratulated her husband and commended his commitment to becoming the titleholder.
“You truly worked yourself to the bone, whether it was posing for shoots or handling social media. You devoted hours upon hours to put together presentations and build relationships with your community and stakeholders.”

Hannes van der Walt Snr, the father of Mr SA, told Express his son has always been an elegant and consistent man.
“Hannes got the break of his life, which I believe originated from his experience with, his connection to and love for people. This will make him leap into the potential 2021 presents,” Hannes Snr said.
