City turning the tide against grass-cutting backlog
“To have these kinds of backlogs between January and March is a norm every year,” said Solly Mashabela.
There is a backlog of horticultural and arboriculture maintenance across the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).
According to Solly Mashabela, metro acting spokesperson, the backlog is due to the festive season break and the amount of rainfall received during December and January.
“To have these kinds of backlogs between January and March is a norm every year,” said Mashabela.
“In recent years, this time of the year has recorded more severe rainfalls accompanied by high temperatures, which is attributed to the changing weather patterns. Vegetation thrives in these conditions.”

Mashabela said service providers appointed for cutting grass are working on areas allocated to them, while internal teams are also doing horticultural maintenance.
“Maintenance schedules will be available at the City’s customer care centres, where the community can get access to them. We are also aware of the high number of complaints; the City is working hard to resolve the complaints,” explained Mashabela.
“We urge our community to be patient and bear with us during the busiest time of the year. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers.”
