“We will kill men,” cry women in Kempton Road following rape allegations
A case of attempted rape and assault has been opened against a 16-year-old male suspect following an incident, which led to a community uproar on Thursday in Kempton Road.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, the suspect appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday, March 19.
“The alleged victim was treated in hospital and has since been discharged, while the extent of her injuries is unknown,” Mtshali said.
On the scene amid heightened tensions and unrest in front of a residential complex’s entrance, community members told Express that a young girl between 15 to 17 years old was allegedly raped by a man in one of the units.
Calls of distress were signalled to fellow community members who jumped to action, seeking justice for women in the area.
Mtshali confirmed that: “With regards to the injuries sustained by the suspect, it alleged the injuries could have been caused by the scuffle between the alleged victim and the suspect.”
The alleged suspect was apprehended in the residential complex before being transported to Kempton Park SAPS. One enraged woman in the community, who wished to remain anonymous, said local women and children live in fear of men committing such crimes.

“We are not protected; we need the government to look out for our children because they are still so young. This must stop, otherwise, we are going to kill men, mark what I’m saying,” she cried.
Multiple community members expressed their disdain against the tendency in which men alleged of sexual crimes are granted bail. To this, Mtshali urged: “Police received information about the alleged rape and the community became angry as the issue of gender-based violence is escalating throughout the country. However, police will advise the community to report such incidents as these officials are capable to conduct a proper investigation.
“That is why these matters are investigated by the Family Child and Sexual Abuse Unit, who is equipped to investigate the matter and present it to the justice department where justice will prevail.”
SAPS, EMPD and multiple security and emergency services attended to the scene.
