Public urged to be vigilant following Easter crime

Easter weekend crime report: A man (20) was shot by armed robbers in Birch Acres while a fatal accident occurred outside of curfew hours.

A 20-year-old male was shot by armed suspects after robbing him of his cellphone on April 4 just after midnight. According to Sgt Barbara Ferreira, the spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the victim was walking from a local tavern towards Mosese Street in Birch Acres.

“The male was busy with his cellphone when an unknown vehicle stopped next to him and two armed suspects approached. The suspects then robbed the victim of his cellphone and shot him in his lower body,” Ferreira stated.

The victim did not sustain fatal injuries and was transported to Thembisa Hospital for further treatment. She said similar armed robberies have been occurring in the Norkem Park precinct and urged members of the public to be vigilant when walking unaccompanied.

Earlier during the weekend, Ferreira also informed Express of a fatal car accident that transpired on April 3. She said: “At 11pm a fatal car accident occurred on the corner of Piet My Vrou and Namakwaduif avenues in Birch Acres. The vehicle was driving at a high speed and collided with a lamp pole.”

Adhere to lockdown regulations

Norkem Park Police Station urges the public to make use of a transport service like Uber or arrange alternative transportation to “Drive Alive”. Ferreira added that both these incidents happened outside of curfew hours as prescribed to the public by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We remind members of the community to adhere to the Covid regulations as communicated by the president and urge them to adhere to the curfew hours. This includes refraining from being under the influence of alcohol or other mind-altering substances,” Ferreira concluded.
