Local dancer wants to keep youngsters off the streets

“I will always express myself through dance,” said Patience Seemela.

Patience Seemela, known as BGF Bujwa to his fans, is confident his dance moves will soon be recognised internationally. The 23-year-old dancer from Winnie Mandela Zone Four in Thembisa has been in the dancing industry for eight years.

Although his father did not approve of his decision to dance, Patience still pursued a career as a dancer.

“My father only accepted that I have a passion for dancing when he saw me on dancing television,” Patience said.

Patience draws his motivation from the likes of DJ Tarico, Msola from Thembisa, Red Devils and Nimix from Major 1 Recordz.

“DJ Sbu once said ‘if you are a dancer you have to look and portray yourself as one and talk about what you love every day’. This inspired me to promote my dancing on all my social media platforms.”

He recently came with up an initiative to teach youngsters in the area to follow in his footsteps.

“As a young person myself, I believe the youth should be kept off the streets by all means necessary, especially in a busy township like ours.”

The dancer holds a diploma in electrical engineering, but he still feels strongly that talent is more important than academics.

“When you do what you love, you do it wholeheartedly.”

The creator of the Yaba Buluku challenge that comes from a song by DJ Tariko was also one of the dancers featured in the music video of Miracle Night by Nimix. He hopes to obtain donations from community members of Thembisa to fund his talent.

“I pray I get funding so I can build a rehearsal hall for young people who are passionate about dancing. We rehearse at a park in Zone Four and our safety is compromised.”

Patience’s hustle was disturbed during lockdown due to gathering restrictions, but he remains hopeful that everything will turn out for the better.

“Even after the loss of income I endured during lockdown, I still believe the dance industry has enough opportunities for up-and-coming dancers, especially those from townships,” Patience said.
