Township rocks with a capital letter T for talent

“It takes a village to raise a child, this includes artists”, said lyricist of theTag Tributes Innocent Shongwe.

An exclusively Thembisan band hosted their first launch at Moses Molekwa Art Centre in Thembisa on May 1, with a theme of defining love.

Tag Tributes band was established in 2016 by Dominic Mphanga and Hloni Macha, who is well known as La Titambo. The band was established as a result of the daily challenges they face in their communities.

According to Tag Tribute’s spontaneous lyricist, Innocent Shongwe, the band believes that their musical talents were nourished in Thembisa.

“We continue to teach, share and learn in the community,” said Shongwe.

The band consists of six members that play an individual vital role in the production of their music. Along with Shongwe other members are Mphanga (guitarist), Macha (drummer), Mafube Sithole (keyboards), Thabang Collen Matlala and ‘Just Thabang’ (bass player).

For the launch, Tag Tributes collaborated with TX Theatre Productions alongside their talented narrator Faith Thobejane. Shongwe also described the theme of the evening as a way of conveying a message of self-love against all odds.

“When you leave here tonight, I hope you leave with a different perspective on love,” Shongwe said during the performance. “I felt proud and overjoyed because it took us a lot of work to get here. Among each other we know how much we pushed to make it happen and to give a good show, therefore we are happy with the outcomes,” Shongwe said. “The band enjoys the support of the community,” Thobejane said.

The Tag Tributes will be performing on May 30 at the Gauteng Arts and Crafts Festival, which will be held at Mosses Molelekwa Art Center.
