Ward councillor survives attempted hijacking
“I stopped at a complex residential place and pressed the visitor’s button to get in when I heard a 9mm cock next to my head.”
An attempted murder investigation is underway following an experience lived through by Ward Clr Simon Lapping and Mark Jansen van Rensburg in an encounter with two armed men on Saturday.
“Yes, I was shot in my leg on Saturday morning in Pomona on my way to a meeting. Simon Lapping was in my car with me. I stopped at a residential complex and pressed the visitor’s button. I heard a 9mm cock next to my head and someone telling me to get out of the car.”
This is how Jansen van Rensburg remembers the events.
“Without thinking twice, I put my Land Rover into reverse and sped up the road, nearly knocking the suspect down.”

Lapping remembers that they also nearly collided with another vehicle in Koppies Road where the incident transpired.
“It was all so scary as the suspects had a gun pointed at us as we tried to get away. They tried firing more shots, but it seemed as though the gun malfunctioned.”
Fortunately, the suspects gave up the fight and escaped the scene in a silver Hyundai SUV.
Jansen van Rensburg elaborated: “While the gun was pointed towards my crotch area, he let off a shot that went into my right leg with an exit wound protruding on the other side as I drove away. I was in instant pain and with quick thinking I had to not only save my own life, but that of my buddy, Simon, which was my priority as worse could have happened.”
Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson Capt Jethro Mtshali confirmed the incident and stated that a case of attempted murder is under investigation.
Mtshali stated: “The victim and his friend were inside their vehicle at Koppie Avenue near Tuscan Place waiting for the gate to open when it was alleged that a suspect pointed a firearm before firing at the driver of the Land Rover, injuring him on his leg.
“The suspects is alleged to have rushed away in Hyundai.”
Jansen van Rensburg was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. Nothing was taken from both victims.
“No arrests has been made. We appeal to anyone with information to contact us on 08600 10111.”
Jansen van Rensburg underwent an operation on Sunday.
“The operation went well and it was the fibula that was smashed by the bullet. So a rod has been put into the bone to stabilise it and I am feeling great.”
