Local residents running for a good cause

Running for hope uses the sport of running or walking to teach people about the Gospel of Christ while raising donations for the needy, encouraging others to stay fit and providing moral support.

A group of residents around the area have embarked on a massive adventure of running for hope.

Runners of Hope (ROH) encourages residents to keep fit and create a family-oriented, pleasant, healthy and energetic environment in which to run and socialise.

At the same time, it will also serve to support community and charitable organisations throughout Thembisa.

According to the organisation’s chairperson and one of the runners, Percy Mongwai, the athletics club was established in October 2018.

“Our biggest intention is to grow a community that grows an interest in personal wellness and fitness. Through running and walking we have achieved this by helping many move from the couch to achieving marathons and ultra-marathons.

“This club is a subsidiary of Hope Restoration Ministries and was established by passionate runners within the church.

“While there are other means of reaching our communities, ROH is restoring its world through casual and competitive running,” said Mongwai.

“During the Covid-19 period, ROH has been using different training activities to create awareness around the pandemic. Runners are taken through the Covid-19 protocol. On June 13, ROH took to the streets of Johannesburg with over 30 runners who participated in the Comrades Hope Run.

“We encourage the residents of Thembisa to take matters of personal wellness serious as it is one of the best ways we can fight diseases.

“Personal fitness assists one in building and fortifying the immune system, which is the biggest winner against the pandemic.

“Sports, in general, has a lasting impact. Walking and running are the most affordable sports and can be undertaken by members of our community without impacting their budgets.

“We, therefore, encourage all the Thembisans to consider walking/running through joining Runners of Hope or any running club near you.”
