Man shot and injured after using pepper spray on motorists, security

“This comes after the man allegedly pepper-sprayed a taxi driver who had stopped at a traffic light at the corner of Monument and CR Swart," said Capt Jethro Mtshali spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

Motorists are advised to find alternative routes following a shooting on Monument Road this afternoon when a 34-year-old man was shot and injured in his leg.

North Rand and Monument roads, at the corner of CR Swart Drive, are closed off.

“This comes after the man allegedly pepper-sprayed a taxi driver who had stopped at a traffic light at the corner of Monument and CR Swart,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“The taxi driver chased the man on foot and the man also pepper-sprayed the driver of a Toyota Corolla.

“During the chase, the man was stopped by a group of people and security officers who had been informed about the incident,” Mtshali said.

Mtshali added that the man allegedly also sprayed the security officers.

“A shooting then occurred. At this stage the motive for the use of the pepper spray is unknown. We opened a case of attempted hijacking and attempted murder,” said Mtshali.

“The man was transported to hospital under police guard.”
