Local residents celebrate LGBTQIA+ community

The theme of the event was How I Got Through the Struggle.

Same Love Entertainment renewed its commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ South Africans on December 5 at Makhulong Park by recognising the contributions of LGBTQIA+ people in Thembisa.

Thato One Big Family, Powa, Standard Bank and Yana were among the organisations that took part in the event to support the cause.

The theme of the event was How I Got Through the Struggle.

“Pride is about more than wearing rainbow clothing and waving flags at parade floats,” said founder of Same Love Entertainment Shatadi Makopo.

“Every day, LGBTQIA+ people experience violence, discrimination and exclusion from their families and society in every community throughout the world because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Therefore, we are celebrating our community through such activities to make society a bit more tolerant of this community. Our local community must take part in the bigger discourse and take steps to create Thembisa as a more fair and tolerant place,” said Makopo.
