“A man had withdrawn R35 000 on March 7, 2018, from a bank on West Street in Kempton Park to pay his staff. When he arrived near Casuarina Street, he was confronted by two men, both armed. The money he withdrew from the bank was sought by the suspects,” Capt Neldah Sekgobela, Ekurhuleni District communications officer, said.
“The suspects and the victim got into a brawl, which was thankfully seen by a passing police vehicle, which came to a complete stop. The men started shooting at police who retaliated and were able to apprehend both of them.”
Sgt Raselomane of Ekurhuleni North’s Trio Task Team was assigned the case for investigation.
During the bail application, it was discovered that one of the accused, Zakhelo Maseko, was on parole for robbery.
His parole was withdrawn and the second accused, Andile Ngoma, was granted bail by the Kempton Park Regional Court.
Police received a tip-off two months later that Ngoma was in possession of two illegal firearms.
“He was apprehended as part of a well-organised operation. During the course of the inquiry into the two firearms, it was discovered that one of them belonged to a police officer assigned to the Ekurhuleni North District.
“The police officer was robbed while attempting to withdraw cash from a bank in Woodbridge, Kempton Park. The officer was robbed at gunpoint, and the suspects took his firearm, car keys and cash.”
Between 2018 to January, the accused were found guilty and convicted on two separate cases.
Both were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment without the possibility of parole and two years on count two in the first court case.
In the second case, Ngoma, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.
