Two suspects were arrested following the alleged assault and murder of a security guard in Olifantsfontein last Thursday.
According to Capt Ben Matimulane, who was the standby duty officer for Ekurhuleni District Zone 1 at the time of the incident, the officer was with three other officers.
“Four security officers, travelling in a company vehicle, came across a group of striking workers who were travelling in three buses,” said Matimulane.
“Initial information suggests that the three buses were on their way to hand over a memorandum somewhere in Boksburg. It is alleged that the passengers from the buses started pelting stones at the security officers’ vehicle. We don’t know what may have caused them to do what they did.
“Immediately after getting out of the bus, they began to assault the officers, one of whom died as a result of the beatings inflicted on him. One was admitted to hospital and the other two managed to escape with minor injuries.”
Stones were found at the scene and the vehicle that the security officers were travelling in, was also pelted with stones, toppled over and found on its side.
The two suspects are alleged to have been among the striking workers who assaulted the officers.
Although Matimulane told Express last Thursday that a case of murder was being investigated, Sgt Phendulwa Skoti, spokesperson for Olifantsfontein SAPS, said on Friday that additional charges of murder, attempted murder, common assault, robbery and malicious damage to property are also probed.
“It was also discovered that two firearms were taken during the incident,” said Skoti.
