Kempton hosts #HearMeToo talk: women urged to report abuse

The message was about empowering women as well as encouraging women to report any forms of abuse.

Reportage of different forms of abuse was the focal point of a recent GBV talk.
The talk, #HearMeToo, was held at Kempton Park’s Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church on March 18.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, addresses women attending Mamie’s Angels’ #HearMeToo talk where the women were encouraged to report different cases of abuse.

“March being the International Woman’s Day Month, Mamie’s Angels partnered with The 1000 Women 1 Voice Trust based in Cape Town to host a GBV talk,” said Francine Nzika, founder of Mamie’s Angels.

Mamie’s Angels is a women empowerment organisation based in Rhodesfield.

“#HearMeToo is basically to create a safe space where women meet to share their stories as part of healing but also to inspire other women and girls to speak out,” added Nzika.

“We invited police officers, social workers, trauma counsellors and health workers to come and take note of the challenges that women face while reporting abuse.”

The talk, #HearMeToo, was held at Kempton Park’s Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church on March 18.

Kempton Park Police Station’s corporate communication and social crime prevention coordinator, Sgt Dorah Phakula, and the station’s spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, attended the talk.
“The message was about empowering and encouraging women to report any forms of abuse,” said Mtshali.

“Also in attendance was Sr Ntsiki Gubela, social worker from People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), various health workers from the civic centre and Spartan Clinic and the very humble and inspiring person, Amanda Ndebele, an author, Miss Plus Universe South Africa, a TV and radio personality and GBV advocate from Soweto.”
