Would robber nabbed in Ivory Park with two firearms

Ivory Park SAPS in cooperation with other law enforcement divisions arrested a suspect after following up on information about potential criminal activity.

A suspect was arrested for possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Ivory Park’s Ext 3.
The arrest was made on the afternoon of July 13.

“The arrest came as a result of information received by the police’s crime intelligence which, with other law enforcement agencies, was followed up,” said Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson Captain Ben Matimulane.

Matimulane said officers proceeded to an address where they were told that a serious meeting was taking place.

“Even though it was not clear to the police officers what the nature of the meeting was, they suspected that the group might have been planning some form of criminal activity.

“One of the attendees at this meeting was apparently on the police’s radar,” said Matimulane.

“They saw vehicles driving in different directions, but the officers focused solely on the vehicle they were after.”

According to the captain, the driver was stopped, searched, and was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms, a 3.8 pistol with erased serial numbers and a Glock, with collectively 14 rounds of live ammunition.

“The man was arrested and detained at Ivory Park SAPS and is due to face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition,” added Matimulane.

The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, welcomed the arrest of the suspect and said that informing the police about any form of criminal activity remains an effective way of preventing crime.

Matimulane said the units involved in the successful operation were the SAPS’s Johannesburg North Crime Intelligence, the Gauteng Traffic’s Special Law Enforcement Unit, the JMPDs Region A and EMPDs Special Task Team, Prasa’s Business Intelligence Unit, a security company named 87 Future and Tracker 58.

“We take our hats off to the agencies involved in this successful operation.”
