Locals demand answers for ‘bad management’ at Tembisa Hospital

Tembisa Community Forum (TCF) has demanded answers on Tembisa Hospital’s “bad management” after the community protested outside the hospital on February 17 to express its displeasure with the way the facility is operated.

Thembisa residents, led by the Tembisa Community Forum and other stakeholders including the Thembisa Neighbourhood, SDUF, and Operation Dududula, Tembisa branch, submitted a memorandum of grievances at the Tembisa Hospital.
According to the chairperson of the Tembisa Community Forum, Lele Lefakane, patients are not given adequate care by staff because the hospital is overcrowded, and healthcare employees are overworked.
Due to the hospital’s bad management, Lefakane stated in the list of demands in the memorandum that the community wants openness in the hospital’s recruiting, adequate care to be provided to its patients and procurement procedures.

She added that the hospital must offer the neighbourhood a concrete turnaround plan of the hospital.
Dr Mohlamme Mathabate, acting CEO of the hospital, welcomed the delegates when they arrived. He also accepted the memorandum on the institution’s behalf.
The forum gave the hospital seven days to respond.
Lefakane stated that the hospital has not responded to the forum.

“The deadline for the hospital to respond to our questions has gone, and despite our repeated emails, the hospital has remained silent. We will wait, but how long? Our communities require answers,” said Lefakane.
Thembisan sent a follow-up inquiry to the hospital on February 28.
In response to the query on the same day it was sent, Tembisa Hospital’s communications manager, Noko Pela, stated that the hospital has escalated the situation to the head office.
