Case against Flying Squad officers accused of extortion POSTPONED

The officers were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on December 2, after allegedly extorting money from a salon owner at Norkem Mall on November 24.

Three officers from the Benoni Flying Squad, facing charges of kidnapping and extortion, appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this morning, January 30.

The case has been postponed to February 25 to allow for further investigations.

Requests for courtroom photography of the proceedings were denied pending the finalisation of investigations.

During their previous court appearance on December 3, the trio were each granted bail of R2 000.

Their bail was extended following today’s proceedings.

According to IPID statements, the officers approached a 38-year-old salon owner and questioned her about her business documents.

She reportedly informed them that the required paperwork was displayed on the wall. The officers then requested her identity document, which she provided.

It is alleged that they subsequently demanded to search her home and on arrival, they insisted on access to a safe and money, demanding R60 000.
