Ekurhuleni police arrest 231 suspects in Operation Shanela 2 crackdown

SAPS intensified crime-fighting efforts in Ekurhuleni, arresting suspects linked to serious and contact crimes.

Police in Ekurhuleni arrested 231 suspects during Operation Shanela 2, conducted from Friday, April 24, to Sunday, April 26.

According to a police statement, the operation targeted various crime hotspots across multiple policing precincts in the region. Four unlicensed liquor outlets were also shut down during the crackdown.

Detectives conducted separate suspect-tracing operations on Saturday, April 25, resulting in the arrest of 165 individuals.

These included 94 suspects linked to contact crimes, 13 for property-related crimes, 48 for other serious crimes, and 41 for gender-based violence-related offences.

SAPS said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to combat crime and improve safety and visibility in communities across Gauteng.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
