Norkem Park SAPS urges stricter school safety measures

A learner was found in possession of a pirate gun at school.

Norkem Park SAPS has raised concerns about school safety following a recent incident in which a learner was allegedly found in possession of a firearm at a local school.

According to reports, the learner refused to be searched, prompting the school to contact the police for assistance.

Upon arrival and further investigation, the firearm initially appeared genuine but was later confirmed to be a pirate gun.

The incident has highlighted the growing need for stricter safety measures and closer cooperation between schools and law enforcement agencies.

School Safety Officer Sergeant Portia Mkhondo of Norkem Park SAPS also expressed concern that some schools fail to report serious incidents, allegedly to protect their image.

Police have strongly emphasised that failing to report such incidents compromises the safety of learners, educators and the broader community.

Parents have been urged to play an active role in monitoring their children’s behaviour and ensuring they do not bring dangerous or illegal items to school.

Open communication between parents, schools, and learners is also considered important in preventing similar incidents.

Mkhondo added that Norkem Park SAPS, in partnership with Youth Crime Prevention and You Are Not Alone (YANA) social workers, remains available to support schools through awareness programmes, counselling, and intervention services, as needed.
