Elizabeth Moselakgomo smartwatch case postponed to October 27

The state prosecutor said Kenneth Chibuzor was the first of the accused to be in possession of the Garmin Venu smartwatch.

The case involving three men accused of offences relating to a smartwatch allegedly belonging to murdered Kempton Park runner Elizabeth Tsontso Moselakgomo has been postponed to October 27 for a bail application.

Kenneth Chibuzor, Stephen Mohlakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on October 19.

During the proceedings, the state prosecutor said Chibuzor was the first of the accused to be in possession of the Garmin Venu smartwatch. His case has since been separated from that of his co-accused.

Chibuzor will remain in custody while his immigration status is obtained and verified.

According to the State, Chibuzor had allegedly applied for asylum but later withdrew the application.

The matter was postponed to October 27 for a bail application.

At their previous court appearance on October 12, the state outlined allegations concerning the acquisition and resale of the Garmin Venu smartwatch allegedly belonging to Moselakgomo.

The court heard that Kenneth Chibuzor allegedly acquired the watch for R900 before selling it to Stephen Mohlakwane Sekhukhune, who allegedly registered it to his Gmail account before selling it to Danial Anthony Moat for R4 000.

Moat allegedly advertised the watch on Facebook Marketplace and resold it for the same amount.

The three men face charges including theft and money laundering, while Chibuzor also faces charges relating to alleged contraventions of the Second-Hand Goods Act.

Sekhukhune and Moat were each granted R10 000 bail, while Chibuzor remained in custody pending further investigation into his documentation. The allegations have not been proven in court.
