Local waste management company destroyed in fire

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be the subject of further investigations.

A large waste management company was destroyed in a fire that sent massive smoke plumes over Spartan on Wednesday night.

The fire broke out at Oricol Environmental Services chemical storage, at 16 Vuurslag Road, at 23:40.

“At around 23:40, the firefighters responded to a structural fire,” said DEMS spokesperson Eric Maloka.

“The firefighters were able to contain the fire with the addition of resources that were sent to the scene to help fully extinguish the blaze and assist with the investigation.

“The firefighters worked throughout the morning and they are still on site doing what they call dumping down.”

Maloka said that the factory is badly damaged and the roof has collapsed. He said that Drizit Environmental team is also on site.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.
