The Centurion Canoe Club hosted the annual 9 Miler Canoe Race at Rietvlei Dam on July 22.

Despite a chilly start, paddlers enjoyed the peaceful scenic countryside bordering the Rietvlei Nature Reserve as they paddled laps around the course set at the dam to make up the nine miles traditionally raced.

The long course was an 18.5km race and there was a short course of 12.2km for those who were not fit enough to enjoy the long challenge.

Pieter Engelbrecht, who is based in Kempton Park, partnered with David Gerber from Benoni to finish in second place in 1:25 hours.

He was also the first sub-veteran age category to finish the race.

The race offered the opportunity to keep fit and motivated training in these cold winter days as paddlers look forward to the spring.
