Local senior citizen marks 80th birthday in style

Marais is a family man, married to his wife Laetitia and they have been married for 56 years.

Herfsland Tuiste vir Seniors was a place to be on July 29 when Johan Marais celebrated his 80th birthday.
Marais was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

He was born in Boksburg before moving to Wonderboom, Pretoria. Marais said he keeps fit by going out for regular walks.

“Everything I did back in the days, I am still able to do even today.”

Marais is a family man who has been married to Laetitia for the last 56 years.

He has five children and 10 grandchildren. Marais said he has been a Kempton Park resident since 1974.

“We first lived in Bonaero Park and I served as a pastor for 35 years. We then moved to Glen Marais and now we are based at Herfsland,” he said.

“Kempton Park is a good place to live in, it has all the resources we need.”

In 1983 he served as a mayor and city councillor.

Marais said during his high school days he obtained five distinctions and he was very good at swimming.

“My profound memories are when we used to go on vacations with my family in a caravan. My children know that they only have one chance in life. We always make sure we meet every six weeks to celebrate life.”

Marais said growing up they had little money and he made the most of everything.

“Always work hard and respect your parents and everyone older than you,” he advised the youth.

“Communication is key, respect each other and do everything united. Family comes first before everything,” said Marais.

Daniella Marais said she’s grateful to have her grandparents alive.

“I am grateful to be celebrating this day with my grandfather, grandmother and parents.

“This day means so much to us and we are more than grateful because not many people have the privilege to grow up with their grandparents.

“I am wishing my grandfather many more years filled with love and happiness,” said Daniella.
