Thembisa schools join fire awareness campaign

The event not only provided a platform for learners to showcase their abilities but also emphasised the importance of fire awareness and environmental responsibility.

To raise awareness about climate change and fire safety, the fire awareness cluster of Working on Fire from Kishugu Joint Venture partnered with the provincial Department of Basic Education to host school debates at Boitumelong Secondary School in Thembisa on September 20.

The debate focused on the connection between climate change and fires and involved six schools and 30 learners engaged in lively discussions and arguments.

Jabulile Shabalala, the fire awareness training officer, explained the essence of the debate was to educate learners about the importance of understanding climate change and its impact on fire incidents.

This debate served as a platform for learners to conduct research, question facts, and develop critical thinking skills regarding environmental issues.

By sharing ideas and knowledge, they encouraged the participants to delve deeper into the environmental impact of climate change and fire.

“The debate competition allowed learners to showcase their talent and skills.

“All participants came well-prepared, displaying a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between climate change and fires. At the end of the event, we had our winners,” Shabalala said.

Bokamoso Secondary School secured the first position, impressing the judges with their in-depth knowledge and thoughtful arguments.

Boitumelong Secondary School claimed the second position, while Thuto Ke Maatla High School took the third spot.

The event not only provided a platform for learners to showcase their abilities but also emphasised the importance of fire awareness and environmental responsibility.

By engaging in the debates it encouraged the students to become proactive contributors to preserving our natural resources and the prevention of fire-related incidents.

This collaboration between the Working on Fire – Kishugu Joint Venture fire awareness cluster and the Gauteng Department of Basic Education highlights the significance of fostering environmental consciousness among the youth.
