Follow-up: GDE recommends investigation after two boys drown

“Disciplinary action will be taken against any persons found to have acted negligently, contributing towards this fatal incident."

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will appoint an independent investigative law firm to probe the circumstances of the deaths of Thembisa learners, Siphamandla Peterson (15) and Sibusiso Sibiya (17).

The two Daveyton Skills School learners drowned during a discipline camp at Rock Falls Adventure Ranch in Centurion on April 15.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane made this recommendation after visiting the school and the respective families of the deceased learners on April 17.

Chiloane said he was disappointed that some Gauteng schools do not take precautionary measures to safeguard the lives of learners during excursions, as well as the lack of adherence to protocols on applying for excursions with the department.

“Disciplinary action will be taken against any persons found to have acted negligently, contributing towards this fatal incident,” said Chiloane.
