Kempton Express Editor to feature on Chevonne Rusch documentary

The episode detailing the horrific abuse suffered by two-year-old Chevonne before her death will be broadcast tonight.

Kempton Express Editor, Charmaine Slater will feature on the latest episode of Huisgenoot Ware Lewensdramas (True Life Dramas) airing tonight at 20:30 on DSTV’s Via on channel 147.

Slater was the journalist who broke the story of murdered two-year-old, Chevonne Rusch in May 2022.

Working as the Assistant Editor for the Bedfordview and Edenvale News as well as the Germiston City News, Slater reported that a case of murder was registered after Chevonne’s lifeless body was taken to the Wannenburg Clinic in Primrose by her mother’s boyfriend, Stefan van Niekerk.

According to the information available at the time, van Niekerk, dropped Chevonnes body at the clinic and left shortly afterwards.

Police were called to the clinic by nurses who suspected that the toddler was murdered.

According to police Chevonnes little body was wrapped in a blanket.

She had blood in her mouth and bruises all over her body. She also had a wound on the back of her head.

When van Niekerk made his first appearance in court Slater applied for permission to take photographs in court which was granted by the Magistrate.

Three months after Van Niekerk was arrested, Chevonne’s mother, Rochelle Botha was taken into custody.

The pair were then charged with murder and rape of a minor among other charges.

This morning, April 29, both were sentenced in the Johannesburg High Court.

Botha was  sentenced to 75 years imprisonment (effective 25 years) and van Niekerk received two life sentences plus an additional 45 years.

The episode detailing the horrific abused suffered by Chevonne before her death will be rebroadcast on Friday night at 22:00 and Sunday evening again at 20:30.
