The 14-year-old will compete in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley after beating the qualifying standard times in all the distances.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the swimmer. To help her perform at her best in Italy, she will compete in the Swimming SA junior national championships in Cape Town this April.

She will also take part in six days of elite training camps from June 25 to July 8.

“The journey to Italy is more than a competition. It is a stepping stone towards my dream of representing my country on the world stage. The exposure, training and international experience will give me the confidence to compete at higher levels,” she said.

Higgins, who has competed at the last two junior nationals, is looking forward to the competition but faces one last sprint that may cause her not to board the plane to Italy.
