Local designer celebrates 10 years of fashion innovation
Hyde Park based Tshepo Jeans founder Tshepo Mohlala reflects on a decade of success and the legacy of African storytelling in fashion.
As Tshepo Mohlala marks a significant milestone of 10 years in the fashion industry, Tshepo Jeans stands as a testament to local craftsmanship, resilience, and the power of community.
What started as a humble venture, with Mohlala making jeans and selling them from the boot of his car, has blossomed into one of South Africa’s most celebrated denim brands, now with a flagship store at Hyde Park Corner, and an atelier in Victoria Yards.
Mohlala’s journey is deeply personal, shaped by the three strong women who raised him: his mother: Masesi Mamba, his grandmother, and his aunt: Takalani, a trendsetter and the first in their neighbourhood to graduate from university.
Tshepo said that their teachings, from hard work and precision to connecting with people, have guided him in both his personal and professional life.
Reflecting on the significance of the 10-year milestone, Mohlala said: “This is proof to the 14-year-old me that dreams do come true, with hard work and focus. 10 years in business is a big deal, especially when you see so many businesses not making it that far.”
He added that the core of Tshepo Jeans lies in its commitment to honouring the past while designing for the future. “Our focus has always been to create items that last for generations, mixing tradition with innovation. As we grow, we continue to remain true to who we are, trusting our gut and evolving with the times.”
Beyond design, Tshepo Jeans is also about telling authentic stories, particularly the story of South Africa. Mohlala believes that African storytelling plays a crucial role globally. “The world does not have our story. It is real, unique, and rich. Through our brand, we are contributing to a global African narrative.”
He explained that he is African-rooted, prioritising local craftsmanship and community. “We come from humble beginnings, and as we rise, we bring others with us.”
Looking ahead, Mohlala has a bold vision for the next 10 years. “We want to redefine what African luxury means, not just for Africans, but for the world. It is time for African brands to stand alongside global giants without feeling inferior. We’re building something that will last for generations.”
