Birchleigh author publishes children’s book

Sandi-Maila said the book aims to teach children and families about the importance of caring for dogs and treating them with kindness and respect.

Birchleigh North resident and storyteller Thembeka Sandi-Maila has published her first children’s book, Buffy and Bibby My Dogs, a charming tale that follows the adventures of two dogs and their human family.

Sandi-Maila drew inspiration from her childhood experience when a dog that had recently had puppies bit her. The incident left her fearful of dogs for many years.

However, growing up in a household where dogs were part of the family helped her overcome that fear and grow to love and understand them.

“Writing the book allowed me to share that journey and the special bond we can have with our pets,” she said.

“I have noticed that many people, especially children, love the idea of having dogs but don’t always understand the responsibility of caring for them.

Some dogs are neglected or misunderstood simply because their needs are not known.

“This inspired me to write a story that teaches children and families, through lovable characters, how to properly care for dogs and treat them with kindness and respect.”

Publishing her book was an emotional milestone.

“Seeing Buffy and Bibby My Dogs in print gave me a sense of fulfilment that’s hard to describe. It’s a reminder that stories matter and that someone might smile or feel inspired because of my words,” she said.

Sandi-Maila has loved storytelling since childhood.

She recalls inventing imaginative tales, especially when surrounded by animals or watching children’s shows.

Despite this early creativity, she only seriously pursued writing later in life, driven by a desire to share meaningful, fun and heart-warming stories with young readers.

Her book has colourful illustrations that bring the characters to life and features Mr Zakhele, a character who highlights the values of love and responsibility in pet care. The story blends humour with gentle life lessons, making it entertaining and educational.

Sandi-Maila describes her writing style as simple, warm and playful, using everyday language and relatable situations.

Her goal is to make stories accessible and enjoyable for children while offering valuable messages about empathy, responsibility and love.

With her book now self-published, Sandi-Maila plans to promote it across social media platforms, including TikTok, where she has already gained traction.

She also intends to reach readers through libraries, schools and online marketplaces like Amazon and Takealot.
A former library assistant, she loves books and working with children.

“I don’t think my degree has much to do with my book,” she shared.

“The gift is from God, and the passion for writing is what drives me. Anyone can write a book if they are gifted and passionate.”

Sandi-Maila has also penned several other children’s stories, including Iphupha likaQhawe, Amazinyo kaNolitha, Going to a Big School, and Usandile Inkwenkana Eligxwempu. These works await funding for illustrations, proofreading and printing.

“My writing often explores themes of love, responsibility, empathy and learning through everyday experiences, especially those involving animals and family life,” she explained.

“Overall, my love for writing came from a mix of things: my time working in libraries, reading to children during storytime, and my passion for creativity.

“I’ve always believed stories can be powerful because they teach, comfort, entertain and connect us. Writing for children feels like planting seeds of joy and learning in young minds.”
