Meet Thembisa’s fitness enthusiast and community champion

From childhood memories of flying kites to his passion for fitness and supporting local businesses, discover what makes this "home of talent" so special to him, and the changes he hopes to bring to his beloved community.

My name is Sphesihle Mhlanga, but most people know me as Yimi Ngedwa Ofithi.

I was born and raised in Thembisa, and it’s the only home I’ve ever known.

One of my favourite childhood memories is flying kites with friends.

Even today, some of the boys from my neighbourhood still come to me for help with theirs – it’s something that’s stayed with me.

What I love most about this community is how people support local businesses. There’s a strong sense of encouragement and unity that makes Thembisa feel like one big family.

Sphesihle Mhlanga is a proud resident of Thembisa.

When in the mood for a good kota, I go to Amos/Amza’s place, as many call him, in Enxiweni. Most of my time is spent at the gym, training people and helping them reach their fitness goals.

If you ask me about a life-changing moment in Thembisa, I’d say not yet. It’s still the same old township I love, with all its character and challenges.

One issue that needs urgent attention is the sewage system in many areas. It’s a serious problem that affects people’s health and quality of life, and I believe the government must step in and fix it.

The person who inspires me most in Thembisa is the owner of the Muscle Tower Gym, known to many as Mfundisi.

As a fellow gym owner and instructor, I look up to him. He’s been in the fitness game longer than I have, and I believe there’s so much to learn from his journey.

As for hidden talents, I think I’m still discovering them. There’s more to me than I’ve tapped into, and I’m excited to see what unfolds.

If I could bring one positive change to Thembisa, it would be to end drug abuse. We’re losing our brothers and sisters to addiction – some lose their lives, others lose themselves. That’s something I want to help change.

The best advice I’ve ever received came from my older brother. He told me, “Growing up only means fewer rights and more responsibilities.” Now that I’m older, I truly understand what he meant.

To me, home is where you find joy, peace and happiness. And in Thembisa, you’ll definitely find that. There’s so much to enjoy and so many people doing interesting, inspiring things.

If I had to describe Thembisa in three words, they’d be: home of talent.

There’s nothing you won’t find here. Anything you can think of is right in Thembisa.
