Thembisa women take part in empowerment and wellness initiative

Women use Mother's Day to reflect and pamper themselves and hardships they face.

Women from Thembisa and surrounding communities came together under one roof to celebrate Mother’s Day, share experiences, support one another, and learn valuable life skills.

The event, organised by YANA in partnership with 1000 Women, featured discussions on gender-based violence, mental health, family well-being and personal empowerment.

Attendees also enjoyed a day of pampering, including spa treatments, in recognition of the vital role women play within their families and communities.

The gathering also marked the beginning of a collaborative relationship between two organisations committed to advancing women’s rights and addressing the challenges women face in the community.

YANA founder and event coordinator Jabulile Maseko said one of the most meaningful aspects of the event was creating a safe space where women could speak openly without fear of judgement.

“My favourite part was the spa treatment because, as women, mothers and heads of households, we really needed that opportunity to relax. What touched me most, however, was how freely everyone could express themselves.

“We had strict rules in place to ensure privacy and respect, which allowed women to speak openly about their experiences,” said Maseko.

“In that venue, we laughed, we cried, and we shared our stories. It became a space where women could leave their burdens behind, even if only for a moment, and find the strength to keep moving forward.”

Maseko said more events of this nature are needed to support women, who are often expected to care for others while neglecting their own well-being.

“We are advocates in our homes and communities, yet there are very few spaces dedicated to healing and supporting women. These gatherings help us understand one another, uplift each other and learn from one another’s experiences,” she said.

She added that the sessions also encourage women to explore additional income-generating opportunities and develop skills that can strengthen their households.

“We want women to understand that there are opportunities beyond their traditional careers. Many women are already earning additional income through side businesses and entrepreneurial ventures.

“These sessions allow us to teach, learn and inspire one another while showing that women are capable of achieving whatever they set their minds to,” said Maseko.

Organisers believe that women remain the pillars of many households, often carrying significant responsibilities while ensuring that families remain strong and united.

The event provided a platform for women to be vulnerable, connect with one another and engage in meaningful conversations about relationships, business, personal growth and family life.

Through initiatives such as these, organisers hope to continue empowering women and creating supportive spaces where their voices can be heard.
