Ward 91 councillor demands urgent action on power cuts
Outages over recent days have impacted Birchleigh North, parts of Norkem Park, Glen Eagles Estate, Swallow Hills and the Harvest Mall area.
Repeated electricity outages affecting Ward 91 residents and businesses require urgent intervention from the City of Ekurhuleni.
Multiple outages over recent days have impacted Birchleigh North, parts of Norkem Park, Glen Eagles Estate, Swallow Hills and the Harvest Mall area. Reported causes include cable theft, damaged feeder cables and infrastructure vandalism.
Ward councillor Desmond McKenzie expressed concern over recurring disruptions.
While repair teams have attended to incidents, McKenzie questioned preventative maintenance, infrastructure protection and long-term network reliability.
McKenzie also highlighted poor communication from the Energy Department.
“Residents and businesses require regular, accurate updates, particularly during extended power disruptions when estimated restoration times are unavailable.”
Infrastructure protection needed
Emergency repairs alone are insufficient.
The municipality must move beyond repeatedly restoring electricity after each incident and implement measures to safeguard infrastructure, address recurring faults and improve network reliability.
McKenzie has escalated the matter to relevant officials, calling for urgent repairs, improved communication and a concrete plan to prevent future outages.
The Kempton Express has requested comment from the City of Ekurhuleni. Feedback will be published as part of follow-up reportage on this matter.
