Ms Refilwe Maphoso said, “To be a Umakoti is the right thing. Umakoti must take care of her in-laws. Take them as your parents. I do have to sweep the yard but not at odd hours of the morning. Culture cannot change but the in-laws need to change their treatment and attitude. The name umakoti is discriminating and makes people in your husband’s family treat you bad."

As the festive season is fast approaching, numerous Tembisa residents will be going to the homelands to visit family members.

Abomakoti (wives) are expected to accompany their husbands and are expected to serve the husband and family hand-and-foot.

Many of these women feel that this cultural practices ought to change to accommodate modern lifestyles.

The Tembisan spoke to residents to get their views on the subject of getting married and being Umakoti in a husband’s family.
