Gauteng outplays rest of SA

The Gauteng women's team won Gold with KwaZulu-Natal getting silver

GAUTENG’S ice hockey teams, which include various players from the three clubs based at Festival Mall, did well with a gold medal clean sweep across all divisions at the South African Ice Hockey Association’s (SAIHA) annual inter provincial tournaments in Cape Town.

The Gauteng Ice Hockey Association (GIHA) entered two boys teams in each division (U/14, U/16, U/18 and U/20). Gauteng’s Blue Team came home with gold medals in U/14, U/16 and U/18 and the Red Team with bronze in U/14, U/16 and U/18. The two U/20 teams won gold and silver.

The Gauteng women’s team won Gold with KwaZulu-Natal getting silver and Western Province bronze.

Individual awards were given to:

U/14 tournament

Best Goalkeeper – Ryan Boyd (Gauteng Blues)

Best Defenseman – Nasr Ho-Yee (Western Province)

Best Forward – Delano Schuurman (Gauteng Blues)

U/16 tournament

Best Goalkeeper – Ryan Boyd (Gauteng)

Best Defenseman – John Venter (Gauteng)

Best Forward – Sky Johnson (Western Province)

U/18 tournament

Best Goalkeeper – Marcello Strydom (Gauteng)

Best Defenseman – Brandon Husselman (Gauteng)

Best Forward – Alex Obery (Western Province)

U/20 Tournament

Top point scorer for the tournament – Dylan Compton (Gauteng)

MVP for the tournament – Wesley Krotz (Western Province Penguins)

Best Goalkeeper – Marcello Strydom (Gauteng)

Best Defenseman – Reelan Malgas (Gauteng)

Best Forward – Xander Botha (Gauteng)

Women’s tournament

Top Point Scorer for the Tournament – Dalene Rhode (Western Province)

MVP for the tournament – Donne Oxenham (KwaZulu-Natal)

Best Goalkeeper – Shaylene Swanepoel (KwaZulu-Natal)

Best Defenseman – Lynette Ebert (Gauteng)

Best Forward – Dalene Rhode (Western Province)

The Kempton players who represented Gauteng were:

U/18: Sabres Club: Eddie Compton (coach), Dylan Compton, Gareth Bremner, David Ruthven, Marchello Strydom and Ryan Boyd.
