Kemptonians nominated
The winners will be awarded at an event at Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg
KEMPTON Park will be well represented at the third annual Ekurhuleni Sports Awards in Boksburg on Friday.
Outstanding athletes from all over Ekurhuleni who have done their City and South Africa proud will get a chance to be recognised for their stellar performances.
Executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, will celebrate all the local sportsmen and sportswomen in their various disciplines during a ceremony at Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre.
Nominated sports teams who will represent Kempton Park include the Valke Rugby Union U/18 sevens team, who won the national schools sevens rugby championships in September 2013; Hoërskool Kempton Park, which had four of its athletes compete at the World Youth Athletics Championships and three cross-country runners who were ranked in the top 10 nationally; Norkem Park High School, which is considered one of the leading schools with regards to its participation in basketball and its teams received numerous silver medals at various competitions, including the National Schools Basketball Championships.
Athletes hailing from Kempton Park who were also nominated include Kyle James Mcclatchie (golf), who represented the South African junior team at the Italian International U/16 Tournament in Biella, Italy in August, where he finished third; and Eckhardt Deon Rossouw (athletics), who won three gold medals at the Athletics South Africa national junior and youth championships in Pretoria. They were both nominated in the junior sportman of the year category.
Mayor Gungubele will also present an extraordinary Mayoral Award to those individuals or sports teams that have contributed greatly to the development, transformation and upliftment of standards of sports in Ekurhuleni.
