Huge pre-season win for Kempton Rugby Club
The excellent performance of the team against Krugerdorp on Saturday is a sign of great things to come
KEMPTON Rugby Club (Wolwe) ended its pre-season training on a high note this weekend, winning two of its three home matches against Krugersdorp Khosas.
Club chairman André Hartley said this was exactly what the club and teams needed, as the standard of Kempton rugby was not good during the 2013 season.
“As we rebuild the club from the bottom again it is great to see some of the old players returning, bringing their experience into the first team,” Hartley said.
According to Johnny van der Merwe they now know what they have in the first team squad. We are almost at full strength with some players that still need to believe in the team.
However, the excellent performance of the team against Krugerdorp on Saturday,is a sign of great things to come. They demolished their opposition 61-0.
The forward pack with Hannes Venter, Ryno Greyling, Rick Myburgh and JP Brummer lead the charge and dominated at the breakdown points. This gave Chris Kasselman (man of the match), André Smith, Gen Smittie and Zack van Loggerenberg command in the back to run in seven tries.
Tries were scored by Van Loggerenberg, Blessing Bakasa, Kasselman, Driekus van Wyk (2), Myburgh, Jaco van Niekerk and Greyling (2).
The second team had a great match which was tightly contested by both teams, with Nico Erasmus’ team going down 29-15.
Tries were scored by Neville Fraser and Eugene Hauptfleisch. Christiaan Jacobs succeeded with one penalty and a conversion. Man of the match was Tiaan Kasselman.
The club’s U/21 Wildehonde had a huge battle against a strong and underestimated Krugersdorp Khosa pack. After hard words at half time from coaches Pat and Johan, the Wildehonde redirected their play to pull through a 30-12 win. Man of the match was Herman Venter.
Tries were scored by Andries Kuhn (2), Dwayne Els, Danie Schmidt (2) and Shaun Venter.
The club still needs U/19 and third team players.
According to Hartley sponsorships are needed and they request businesses to contact them. BEE points can be earned by sponsoring the club. Contact Hartley at Hartley_a@mweb.co.za.
