Bonaero vets clinch the title

They were also runners-up in the cup

BONAERO 74 Football Club’s veterans men’s team won the 2014 league.

At the beginning of the season, the veterans division 3 side, who all came from Birch Acres Football Club, were warmly welcomed into the Bonaero 74 fold. With a mediocre start to the season with three games played and only four points on the log, the side started playing as a well oiled machine. At the turn of the season, Bonaero had won all their games and started to have belief they could go all the way and compete for the league title.

At this stage three other teams, namely Springs Old Boys, Old Benonians and East Sporting were all in the run for the title.

Bonaero stayed true to their form and with only one loss in the second half of the season became the division 3 league title Winners.

Bonaero suffered only two losses and one draw during the entire season, scoring 38 goals and conceding only 18, the best defence record in the league.

Bonaero also played in the cup final against East Sporting at Alberton FC. The game was hard fought and at the final whistle, the score was 1-1.

The score remained 1-1 after extra time and went into a penalty shootout. East Sporting went on to win the final with Bonaero finishing cup runners-up.

The entire side played their all during the season with the whole team being named as players’ of the season.

The team would like to thank, to name a few, Leon Schelvis, chairman of Bonaero 74 FC, for welcoming the side into the Bonaero 74 Football Club and for his support, as well as sponsors Mining Pressure Systems and African Arete, Ian Wilson, team manager and Paul Cross, assistant manager, for their support and guidance during the season.

They also thank Nicky Wilson and Joanne Cross for their support, organising and being two of the team’s most loyal supporters, besides John Cross.
