SA Bowls introduces ranking system

Players, as do golfers for their handicap system, will electronically input their own success at tournaments

SOUTH African lawn bowls is to introduce a ranking system for its 26 000 men and women players, to be known as the Players’ Ranking System.

Final details have been thrashed out at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Bowls SA’s president, Allan Freeman.

Perfect Delivery Brokers are the title sponsors.

The system will operate on the Perfect Delivery IT platform, emulating the successful ranking system adopted by cricket on the Coopers & Lybrand platform.

Says Freeman: “Our ranking system will not form part of the national selection criteria but is intended merely to stimulate interest among top competitive players.”

Players, as do golfers for their handicap system, will electronically input their own success at tournaments. The system works with points being allocated at various tournaments, all allocated on an equal basis, except for district events where they are weighted according to the size of the district.

The sponsors’ managing director, GC Swanepoel said: “We have worked closely with Bowls SA for many years; it is a prestigious and vital service that has been the wish of the players for some time.”

The system caters for:

District: open singles, fours, trips and pairs.

Regional: Gauteng Open, Natal Open, All Cape and All Free State

National: open singles, fours, pairs, SA mixed pairs and SpecSavers Pro 10 pairs.
