Buttrick races to second

Elderly Kemptonian does it again

KEMPTON Park’s Vince Buttrick, a great grand master (65+ years) achieved a podium position finishing second to a former world champion, Len Jenkins Senior, at the the SA Canoe Marathon Championships at Homestead Lake in Benoni at the weekend.

The singles (K1) race took place on Saturday while the doubles partnerships (K2) took place on Sunday.

Michael Stewart, reigning champion of Benoni’s canoe club, Ekurhuleni Kayak Club, was the best local achiever with a fourth place in the veteran men’s age category (40+), finishing the gruelling 22.5km in a time of 1 hour 50 minutes.

The race consisted of six laps around Homestead Dam, with five portages. The great grand master race was 18.9km and portages were not required.
