Novela wins marathon

Tembisa's athlete, Ms Lorraine Novella, has won the South African 10 kilometre championship women's title.

Ms Novela (24) was the lady to beat in a top-class field and crossed the line in a time of 35:35.

The race took place at Eersterus in Pretoria on Saturday last week and it was Ms Novela’s first attempt at the race.

“I am impressed with myself and I am happy I won the championship title,” she said.

Ms Novela has been running since she was in primary school.

“I love running and considered my talent in 2012, after I won several medals and trophies,” she added.

Ms Novela, who is being coached by Mr Glen Van der Westhuizen from the Benoni High Athletics Club, will be representing South Africa at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Guiyan, China, on March 28.

“I am hoping to make my country proud in the next race,” she said.

Ms Novela is also aiming to win the 1 500 metre championship title at the Olympics.

“Perseverance is the master of everything and performance will show if young people have talent,” she said.
