Canoeists show their strength at Homestead Dam

Local paddlers show their mettle at championships

HUNDREDS of paddlers took to Benoni’s Homestead Dam, home of East Rand Kayak Club, at the weekend to test for the SA Marathon Championships in KwaZulu-Natal in June.

The K1 championships, held to identify the best Gauteng team for the upcoming championships, was held on Saturday with the doubles/K2 combinations on Sunday.

Vince Buttrick from Kempton once again held on to his reputation as a top Great Grand Master paddler (over 65 years), finishing second in his 18.5km race in a time of one hour and 37 minutes.

Another Kempton Park resident, Richard Tandy, partnered with Guy Carter to take third place in the K2 doubles race sub-veteran age category, finishing their 22km race in one hour and 53 minutes.
