Ice hockey champion represents his country
His dad manages an ice rink and that’s how he was introduced to the sport
AT only 15 years of age, Dion Phakathi is a member of the u/18 National Ice Hockey team and has received Springbok colours in the sport.
The grade 10 learner at Rhodesfield Technical High School (THS) was introduced to the sport while accompanying his dad Paulo Zibusiso to the ice rink he manages.
“My father has been very supportive and encouraging, as well as my coach. They always worked together to see me get successful and better with my career,” he said.
Phakathi pointed out that ever since he started playing the sport, he has had a number of coaches who have come and gone.
“The best coach I have ever had and still have right now is Eddie Compton,” said Phakathi.
Phakathi also appreciates the ice rink owner, Dave Rodgers, for helping him on a number of occasions.
“He has helped me out a lot. He often sponsored me with the equipment and he paid for my tour in March 2015.”
In the future, Phakathi would really love to see his career take off.
“Throughout my career so far, I have had a lot of achievements and awards. I received ‘Best Defenceman’ three consecutive times for my club,” he added.
Rhodesfield THS is very proud of their ice hockey champion.
