The top three finishers of the Pick n Pay Swazi Inn Soccer Tournament (Unity Sports Games) in the senior category will receive exclusive prizes ranging from cash, soccer kits, trophies and medals.
The champions will walk away with R70 000 cash, a trophy, soccer kits and gold medals.
The first runner-up will walk away with R25 000 cash, soccer kits and silver medals and third placed winners will go home with R10 000 cash, soccer kits and bronze medals.
A fourth runner-up will also go home with a soccer kit.
The junior u-17 teams, the top two finalists, will compete for a soccer kit, trophy and medals.
According to the tournament’s organiser, Kenneth Sithagu, the tournament is meant to keep youth out of dangerous substance abuse and from the street.
“For juniors, we are targeting about eight soccer teams while with the seniors we are targeting 32 teams. At the moment the tournament is only sponsored by Pick n Pay Swazi Inn. We are still looking for more sponsorship and are negotiating with other sponsors to make the tournament a success,” said Sithagu.
Sithagu said the response from soccer teams in Tembisa and Ivory Park is very impressive and teams are looking forward to the challenge.
“We are encouraging other soccer teams to register and be part of the tournament. We are working hard to try an upgrade this year’s tournament compared to last year’s. The aim is for the community coming together to support this tournament and young people be actively minded about sports,” added Makhura.
Affiliation fee for the juniors u-17 is R850 and senior teams R3 000.
“Street vendors are welcome to register to sell during the tournament. This will also help them grow their businesses,” said Sithagu.
