Two out of two for cash-strapped Kempton Park Football Club

The league season is due to begin on September 1 and the side is in dire need of sponsors.

SAB Castle League new boys, Kempton Park Football Club, began its season in the preliminary rounds of the Nedbank Cup being played in Delville Germiston at the weekend.

They covered themselves in glory on both Saturday and Sunday with a brace of hard-fought victories.

They were drawn to play Alberton, a well-established Castle League side in the first round on Saturday. In an exquisite performance they overcame their rivals by 3-1. Ex Maritzburg United striker Euclid Palmer scored a stunning hat-trick as the boys in red turned in a superb performance.

His first goal came early in the piece when he dribbled around a pair of Alberton defenders before firing just inside the right-hand post. Late in the first period and much against the run of play, Alberton equalised on a rare break into the Kempton half.

Normal service was resumed in the second half when 10 minutes in, Palmer nipped between two defenders to strike home a Humphrey Botopelo cross. With five minutes to play, the scoring was completed when Palmer again outsprinted a flagging Alberton defence to slide the ball underneath the keeper.

Kempton was given the toughest of draws in the second preliminary round when Luso Africa, who were runners-up in the Ekurhuleni SAB Castle League last season, was to be their opponents on Sunday.

In the tightest of games where no quarter was asked or given, Luso clung on to record a 0-0 draw with Kempton Park having the better of the few chances created by either side.

A penalty shootout ensued and when Luso missed and Kempton did not, the tie was over with Kempton Park victorious 5-4.

This new team is not only a credit to the club but to the city of Kempton Park as well.

The league season is due to begin on September 1 and the side is in dire need of sponsors for transport, training and general playing costs. With good sponsorship and backing, the five-year-plan to have the team in the national first division will be well within reach.

Any potential sponsors should contact club chairman Basil Botha on 072 419 1521 to make their proposal.
