Tembisa Golf Club secures sponsor for annual club championships

Tembisa Golf Club’s annual club championship event has received a lucrative injection of R20 000.

The championships will take place at Kempton Park Golf Club on May 18 and 19.

Kays Mnguni, CEO of Sword South Africa (Pty) Ltd and director of Xara Books (Pty) Ltd in Midrand, said he felt the need to be associated with Tembisa Golf Club, hence the sponsorship.

The club championships are by far Tembisa Golf Club’s biggest event. What makes the club championships special is the fact that beside prizes and bragging rights that come with becoming the champion, it also encapsulates the feeling of taking part in a major event.

There is always enormous pressure to deal with and that makes for the excitement and passion.

Just like any major golf event, the club championships are not for anyone to win. It takes a special golfer to produce that kind of magic over the two days of gruelling golf that ultimately wins it.

Jerry Mosia is the defending champion and Nzima Tsotetsi is threatening as a past winner, having won it twice before. Young Lebo Makume is lurking and, without a shadow of a doubt, these three are the gentlemen to beat.

There are also other capable players who may upset the apple cart in the likes of Kakapo Sibandze, Surprise Selai, Themba Mazibuko, Mporo Mathiyase, Ayanda Jaco, Tana Mowelo and Bernstein Mazibuko.

The stakes are high, but all eyes will be on the defending champion, Mosia, who won in 2016 and last year. He packs a solid all-round game and has the mettle to stay in control once he gets going.

The final 36th hole will nevertheless determine whether the trophy goes to Umthambeka Section or elsewhere. Umthambeka produced legendary Tembisa golfers who conquered the championship, but of late that section is struggling a bit.
