Soccer players get a chance to showcase their talents

Jeremiah Maphanga Soccer Tournament nurtures talent in the township.

Ingwe community development empowers Jeremiah Maphanga Soccer Tournament in Tembisa.

Founder of the tournament Jeremiah Maphanga said the games are aimed at keeping children off the streets.

The tournament kicked off on May 25 and wrapped up on June 2 with Bahlaloga FC crowned as the champions.

“This was the first-ever annual tournament at Esselen Park. It was a great event where we were able to unearth talent.

“The community appreciated everything we did in terms of football and we were able to bring business to the vendors,” said Maphanga.

The event was supported by big names like Power Makhura of Powerico and Premier Soccer League (PSL) players like Joseph Mhlong from Black Leopard, Bafana Kali from Uthongathi, Lerato Chabangu from Baberwa and Mthusi Kgopane, also from Baberwa.

Maphanga said they aim to get the Jeremiah Maphanga Soccer Tournament recognised by PSL, National First Division (NFD) and ABC Motsepe League scouts.

“Ingwe Community Development made this soccer tournament possible.

“I would like to appreciate everything they did for us. If it was not for them, this would not be possible.

“They showed us a true reflection of community development. They will be part of us throughout this journey,” Maphanga said.

Director of Ingwe Community Development Albert Maja said the reason why they take part in these projects is to reduce crime and eradicate unemployment.

“We started last year and we do not want any profit for supporting these initiatives.

“We just want to help the community by making sure our youth are getting skills,” said Maja.

He said they also help in career development and administering township projects for young people to realise their dreams.
