Teen rider (14) wins top awards in equestrian world

Laura Davidtz (14) and her warmblood cross horse, Blue Crush, competed in and excelled at the South African Pony Rider and Junior Derby held at Kyalami Equestrian Park in May.

Glen Marais equestrian athlete Laura Davidtz (14) is definitely making her mark in the equestrian world.

The youngster and her warmblood cross horse, Blue Crush, competed in and excelled at the South African Pony Rider and Junior Derby at Kyalami Equestrian Park in May.

The pair competed in four one-metre derby tracks, winning three out of four classes and achieved the fastest time in the other. They also won the championship derby class in the one-metre section.

Davidtz, who has been riding for three years, said she was extremely excited to have won.

“It feels really good and thrilling to have won with Blue Crush. I was really excited about what we achieved together,” said Davidtz.

“I have entered and won a couple of competitions but this is one of the biggest and I am hoping to bring in more wins.

“My love for horses started with my mom when she took me horse riding and since that one lesson I never looked back. I enjoyed it and that one lesson was all it took to get me hooked.”

Davidtz also mentioned that her secret in excelling at competitions was training six days a week.

“The number of hours I spend in training and my bond with Blue Crush are what I see as my secret. It is also important as a rider to set and stick to a goal and work very hard towards it,” she said.

“I used to play hockey and netball but it interfered with my riding times so I decided to drop them for riding. My goal is to be a top show jumper and own a lot of horses.

“Thank you to my instructor, Ashley-Lynn Coutts from Leopard Creek Equestrian Centre, who has been with me from the beginning. She has really taught me a lot. Thank you to my family and friends for their continued support.”
