New soccer tournament set to put Tembisa on the map
Hlongwana said they are still negotiating with companies to come on board as sponsors.
A new amateur soccer tournament, still to be named, earmarked for the summer season is fast taking shape.
Organisers of this envisaged annual soccer tourney told this paper that plans are well on track.
“We came up with the idea of hosting such a tournament after realising our local teams and young people are hungry for some game time.
“We were also inspired by the Tembisa Marathon and other soccer tournaments, such as the Philly’s Games,” said Aubrey Hlongwana, one of the tourney’s organisers.
“The hosting of this annual competition will be good for the development of the beautiful game in the area. We strongly believe this tournament will put both the township and the entire province on the map. We would, therefore, like to invite all local soccer teams, either participating in organised and structured local league divisions, to avail themselves and be part of this tournament,” he continued.
Hlongwana said they are still negotiating with companies to come on board as sponsors.
“A well-planned event such as this requires a lot of resources and money. So we are still in talks with a number of local companies and businesses to come aboard and sponsor this tournament. There is no doubt that the competition will inspire many young and talented players who will stand a good chance of being selected by teams in the Premier Soccer League and the National First Division,” he said.
“We are looking at creating a tournament that will leave an everlasting mark. We are looking to create something that will not only be beneficial to our footballers, but also something that will leave many local unemployed people with means to put food on the table. We are certain that a few unemployed women will benefit from hosting such an event. They will participate as vendors throughout the tournament and we are sure that they will make enough money which they could use to buy school uniforms and food for their children,” he continued.
He said all logistics pertaining the hosting of this tournament will be communicated in the media in due time.
