Highlands Park ready to take on Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Saturday

Even though this will be the home team’s first appearance in this competition, the mood in the camp is high

The only home team participating in the country’s elite league, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Highlands Park will entertain the Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, when they meet in the MTN 8 competition on Saturday at the Orlando Stadium.

Kick-off is 6pm.

The home team goes to this clash with some pride and confidence, having registered an away one-all draw against Maritzburg United during the Absa Premiership clash on Friday at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Even though this will be the home team’s first appearance in this competition, the mood in the camp is high, with the players aiming to cause an upset.

With experienced players such as the striking force led by the ever-energetic Rodney Ramagalela, Lindokuhle Mbatha and Tendai Ndoro, the future looks bright for Highlands Park.

The 11th edition of the MTN 8 tournament will see this year’s winners pocketing R8 million, the richest prize money in South African cup football. The other seven competing teams will each take home R800 000.

At the launch of this competition, the sponsors announced several innovations, meaning this year’s tournament will be unlike any other. Football lovers will now be able to control the game through the “OWN THE GAME” fan campaign.

The campaign includes giving power and control to the fans, such as the power to choose man of the match and the power to choose their moments of brilliance, among others.

PSL’s Professor Ronnie Schloss said, “The partnership between MTN and PSL has always been about innovation and pushing the envelope for the benefit of the most important stakeholder – the supporter. Through fan engagement initiatives, we have seen a relationship between the two parties that has grown stronger and yielded rewards for both brands. Not only is this competition well supported by the supporters, it is also a commercial success for MTN. The start to the 2019/20 season has shown that we are in for an exciting season of football and we look forward to a thrilling 2019 MTN8 edition.”
